This was a challenging candlestick to make. I used an offset turning technique, which gives it its slanted appearance. Getting a quality surface on the flat parts took a very steady hand. Sanding offset pieces generally takes at least twice as long, often more, but it’s worth it.

I love working with shedua because of its rich, warm brown color, and it takes to lathe tools well. It also pairs well with lighter woods and lighter surroundings, and is very similar to black walnut if that’s what you’re looking for.

The title of the piece may seem quirky. Fans of Douglas Adams (“The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy”) will recognize it as the galactic sector in which Earth resides (well, ok, technically resided) and where Zaphod and Trillian picked up Arthur and Ford. if none of that makes any sense to you, that’s OK! Just move on to the next paragraph. 🙂

This piece is 6″ tall and takes a single tea light or votive on top. At $50, it’s priced quite reasonably given the effort required to craft it. This is sure to be a conversation starter when you have guests over!
